LOCATION:
Calayan (Ibanag language, meaning "where laya (ginger) abounded") is a municipality in the province of Cagayan. It is located in the South China Sea, in Luzon Strait north of Luzon Island. The town is composes of four of the five major islands of the Babuyan Islands (Calayan, Camiguin, Dalupiri and Babuyan Islands). Calayan Island is the largest of the Babuyan Islands. Fuga Island, the fifth island within the Babuyan Islands, is part of Aparri municipality of Cagayan.

HOW TO GET THERE?
From Manila, you may ride a bus (Victory Liner) bound for either Claveria or Aparri in Cagayan. In Aparri, you may ride a tricycle going to the MV Eagle Ferry Port. The ferry is the only way going to Calayan Island. In Claveria, you may ride small boats or lampitaw located in their port going to Calayan Island.

Some species can only be found in Calayan. The famous is the Calayan Rail (a bird specie). You can do animal-hopping in their forest.

Banayuyu fruit is famous in Calayan, a wild berry from the grape family that only grows in Calayan. The Banayuyu wine is also available in the island.

Useful Tips:
  • Electricity runs from 12:00 noon to 12:00 midnight.
  • There are no ATMs or banks in the island.
  • There are few internet shops available only for a half day.
  • The best time to travel here is during summer because the sea condition during rainy season especially in September or October are affected by shifting wind patterns.
  • Before riding a boat going to Calayan, make sure that you are full, not hungry to avoid headaches while on the route.
